Shelf life of a Banknote

2015-12-18 Fri

Have you ever wondered what the lifespan of the currency that you use is? All the currency notes wear out eventually but how long do they actually survive in circulation, changing hands?

The average life of a currency note in India is almost a year. As the currency notes are not made of paper they survive longer than you would expect them to last. However the shelf life of the note depends on the number of times it has “changed hands”. The notes of smaller denomination are used more frequently and hence are subject to more wear and tear than the notes of higher denominations.

So the ‘greens’ (INR 500) and the ‘reds’ (INR 1000) will have a longer shelf life as they are likely to be tucked in your wallets and cupboards safely, however owing to inflation their value is likely to decline.

Spend them while you can!
